Well, not really, but the use of spoons, forks, and knives does date back to the ancient Greeks. Brought to Europe in the 10th Century by Byzantine Emperor Otto's wife Theophanu, flatware has played a pivotal role in dining history. Though 11th Century Europeans saw the use of a fork as an "unmanly affectation" preferring their hands as the main utensil, flatware quickly caught on and became a symbol of wealth and prominence (the spread of communicable diseases such as dysentery helped spur this). Serving and personal utensils transformed from simple wooden or lead pieces to ornate ivory and gold keepsakes overnight. And while the tradition of carrying your own bejeweled fork or knife has died out, the need for attractive and sophisticated flatware has not. Just when you thought you were learning, I hit you with the upsell. Salesmanship is really a lost art.
But honestly, flatware is the most important part of any dinner party or everyday meal. It's the only thing that everyone comes in contact with and HAS IN THEIR MOUTH. So would you rather be the Prince with the sophisticated forks, or the Pauper spreading disease with their hands?
